More than $13,000 was raised at Pet Helpers “Sucking It Up to Save Lives” Oyster Roast
Charleston, SC – Oyster and dog lovers alike, came out to Pet Helpers Seventh Annual Oyster Roast and Silent Auction this past Sunday. The roast, sponsored by Rosebank Farms Café and Bowens Island Restaurant, raised more than $13,000, which met and exceeded last years total of $10,000!
The event was held at the rustic, local oyster eating stopping ground; Bowens Island Restaurant. More than 300 guests were able to enjoy hot delicious oysters cooked by up-and-coming local catering company called, “Fatboy’s.” The oysters were continually shoveled onto long tables and people used their Pet Helpers Shucking Knives to dive in and eat all day long. For the weaked stomach there was chili, hotdogs and even veggie dogs were on hand. The silent auction items ranged from an overnight stay for two at the Mills House Hotel to a Riverdogs Piggy Bank! Music performed by The Shakin Martinis and Sol Driven Train was enjoyed by all. Pet Helpers would like to thank all their sponsors, donors, volunteers and staff who were all able to help make the event spectacular!
Dogs of all kinds came out to enjoy the beautiful weather and spent the day with their owners outdoors. Executive Director, Suzanne Carr added “We are so honored that everyone was willing to work so hard to help raise funds for Pet Helpers and all our animals.”
“The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for a day to eat oysters,” said Carol Linville, President/Founder of Pet Helpers. “Today’s event is not only a fundraiser but it was also a post celebration of our grand opening of our new adoption center which opened two weeks ago.”
On Saturday, March 29th, the doors to Pet Helpers’ new Adoption Center and Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic officially opened. Hundreds of visitors and citizens were on hand along with other local officials. Local constables volunteered time to control traffic and help park cars for five hours and over 150 animals were on hand, in their new 'digs' to meet everyone!
Pet Helpers is a nonprofit animal and rescue and adoption center where all animals are kept until adopted. They are open Monday – Saturday. For more information call 795-1110 or go to www.pethelpers.org.
