Weezer Update

On Friday, March 5, Weezer underwent a Rhinotomy (an incision into the nose that allows for full view of the nasal passage for radical sinus surgery) performed by Dr. Henry Bianucci, a specialist at Veterinary Surgical Care.  Dr. Bianucci went into the soft pallet and was able to clean up much scar tissue, bullet fragments and mucus from Weezer’s sinus cavity.  He came through the surgery very well and was able to smell for the first time since he had been shot.  In fact, he even attempted to get on the dining room table in search of good-smelling food!

On March 8, Weezer went in for an emergency appointment because he was unable to breathe and was gasping for air.  Dr. Bianucci took him right in and advised Wendi (his foster mom) to give him “mouth-to-nose” treatment when we had difficulty breathing, in hopes of keeping his air passage open.  After a about a week of constant medication to help with inflammation and swelling, it was obvious that Weezer’s breathing difficulties and nasal discharge were continuing to decline.  Pet Helpers attempted to flush Weezer’s nasal cavity three times a day with saline, much to Weezer’s dismay!  The flushing was obviously not working, so it was time to go in for yet another consultation.
Dr. Bianucci reexamined Weezer and determined that another surgery was needed, noting that it is common for this type of a severe injury to need at least two to three surgeries in order to be completely successful.  Weezer and his foster family (who love and adore him – as you can tell by the willingness to do the mouth-to-nose treatment!) are all waiting for further consultation before scheduling his next surgery.

Every day, we are thrilled and amazed by the number of animal lovers and supporters we encounter in the community and here at Pet Helpers.  We could not exist without the support of the community and donors such as you.  We are truly appreciative of your generosity and, on behalf of Weezer and all the animals at Pet Helpers, send our heartfelt thanks for the donations that made these procedures possible!
