Special Needs Funds
"Baxter & Friend" Adopted 2010
With limited funds for animals with special needs, when we receive an animal who needs a life-saving surgery or has a treatable illness with expensive medication, we have a difficult time covering those additional costs. These funds are a way for you to donate critically needed donations which will be used specifically for these animals when they are received at the shelter.
These funds include:

Protect That Gentle Heart - Heartworm Prevention
.
All dogs are susceptible to fatal heartworm disease whether they rarely go outside or live in the great outdoors. The mosquitoes that carry the disease can be found everywhere...although they are especially prevalent here in South Carolina.
Heartworm, or Dirofilaria immitis, is a potentially deadly parasitic worm spread by mosquitoes. Dogs are the most common hosts for heartworm, although it is also found in cats and other animals. It commonly lives in the right side of the heart as well as the lungs and the pulmonary arteries and can survive for about five years in a dog's heart and reach lengths of twelve inches. The disease may be advanced by the time an animal shows signs of infection. It is diagnosed mostly in three to eight-year-old dogs; but in our Lowcountry area, dogs as young as one-year-old can be infected.
Please consider a donation to our Have a Heart Fund to help treat one of our shelter pets from a potentially fatal disease, and give them a chance of a happy, healthy life!
